Did Vergiate Have the Hangars Yet?
The storage claim depends on whether Vergiate had the right hangars and industrial capacity before its better-known mid-1930s aviation role.

Introduction
The claim that an alleged recovered craft from the supposed 1933 Magenta incident was stored at Vergiate depends on a simple historical question: what facilities actually existed there in 1933? The answer is more nuanced than many retellings suggest. Vergiate was already part of northern Italy’s aviation industry by 1933, but it was not yet the expansive aerospace complex familiar from later decades. Contemporary evidence shows an established SIAI (later Savoia-Marchetti and ultimately SIAI-Marchetti) manufacturing presence in the Vergiate–Sesto Calende area, with aircraft production, workshops and hangars supporting the company’s activities. However, the evidence does not identify a specific hangar at Vergiate that can be tied to any alleged secret storage operation in 1933. The historical record therefore supports the existence of aviation infrastructure, but not the more specific claim that a recovered object was housed there. The chronological problem in the Vergiate claim
One reason the Vergiate story appears plausible is that readers often associate the site with its later prominence as a major aircraft and helicopter manufacturing centre. That later reputation can obscure what the location actually looked like in 1933.
By that year, SIAI had already been operating for nearly two decades. Founded in 1915 as the Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia, the company established its original seaplane base at Sant’Anna on Lake Maggiore near Sesto Calende, where it combined a flying school, waterside infrastructure and manufacturing. During the 1920s, under the leadership of designer Alessandro Marchetti, the firm expanded rapidly and became one of Italy’s leading aircraft manufacturers, producing famous types such as the S.55 flying boat and developing new military aircraft for the Fascist regime. The important distinction is that the company’s industrial footprint had expanded by 1933, but the best-known modern facilities at Vergiate largely belong to later phases of development. Many photographs and descriptions used in modern discussions depict post-war or substantially enlarged facilities rather than the site as it existed in the early 1930s. Did Vergiate have usable hangars in 1933?
The available historical evidence indicates that the answer is probably yes in a general sense, but not in the specific way implied by the UFO story.
An aircraft manufacturer capable of producing and testing military aircraft necessarily required:
- enclosed assembly buildings and workshops;
- maintenance space;
- engineering offices;
- storage for aircraft and components;
- hangars for completed or partially assembled aircraft.
These were ordinary features of an aircraft factory rather than evidence of any unusual activity. By the early 1930s SIAI was producing advanced military and civil aircraft in significant numbers, making some form of hangar infrastructure unavoidable. The company was already benefiting from state contracts and participating in Italy’s expanding aviation programme. What is not established is the exact configuration of Vergiate’s facilities during 1933. Publicly available company histories describe the firm’s growth but do not provide a detailed site plan identifying which hangars existed in that year or when each major building was completed. This gap matters because many modern discussions implicitly assume that later-known structures were already standing.
What would count as evidence of usable facilities?
If the storage allegation were historically accurate, researchers would expect evidence beyond the mere existence of an aviation factory.
Useful evidence would include:
- construction records dating individual hangars to before 1933;
- factory maps identifying secure enclosed storage areas;
- military requisition documents;
- correspondence referring to unusual deliveries;
- security orders;
- transport records showing exceptional cargo arriving from the Magenta area;
- memoirs or witness testimony describing extraordinary restrictions at the site.
At present, none of these categories has produced publicly verified documentation linking a particular Vergiate building to the alleged recovery.
Instead, published versions of the Magenta narrative generally state that the object was taken to “SIAI-Marchetti hangars” without identifying a building number, warehouse, custodian or archival record demonstrating that such a transfer occurred. Later summaries of the story repeat this location but ultimately trace it back to the same small body of UFO literature rather than independent industrial archives. Why later aerospace history can mislead readers
A major source of confusion is that Vergiate genuinely became one of Italy’s enduring aerospace centres.
During the Second World War the area expanded further as aircraft production intensified. After the war, despite severe damage and corporate restructuring, the industrial site survived, eventually becoming associated with Agusta and later Leonardo’s helicopter division. Modern Vergiate includes extensive production halls, flight-test facilities and final assembly lines that reinforce the impression of a long-established, massive industrial complex. [Leonardo]leonardo.comItalyProduciamo elicotteri sin dagli anni Cinquanta e oggi abbiamo la gamma più completa per usi commerciali, di pubblica utilità…
This retrospective view creates a subtle historical trap. Because today’s site is large and technically sophisticated, readers may unconsciously project that image backwards onto 1933. Yet industrial sites evolve continuously. Buildings are demolished, enlarged, rebuilt and repurposed. Without construction records for individual hangars, the existence of today’s facilities cannot be treated as evidence that equivalent secure buildings existed in precisely the same form at the time of the alleged Magenta incident.
The same caution applies to references to famous structures such as later engineering hangars. Their presence in twentieth-century photographs does not establish that they existed before or during 1933.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Taken together, the historical record supports several conclusions.
First, Vergiate was not an invented location added to the Magenta narrative. It was genuinely part of an important aircraft manufacturing district connected with SIAI and the wider aviation industry around Lake Maggiore. The company possessed workshops, aircraft assembly capability and hangars appropriate for an active manufacturer by the early 1930s. Second, this industrial capability makes Vergiate a plausible type of location where secret government work could theoretically have been carried out. From a logistical standpoint, an aircraft factory offered engineers, enclosed buildings and technical expertise unavailable in ordinary warehouses.
Finally, that logistical plausibility should not be confused with historical proof. No publicly verified archival evidence has demonstrated that a recovered object from an alleged 1933 crash was transported to a specific Vergiate hangar, stored there, or examined by SIAI personnel. The known evidence establishes the existence of an aviation industrial site, but it does not establish the extraordinary storage claim attached to it.
