Introduction
The American-transfer branch of the Magenta crash story says the alleged object recovered in Fascist Italy in 1933 did not remain an Italian secret. In this version, it was held near the SIAI Marchetti aviation facilities at Vergiate or Sesto Calende, survived the fall of Mussolini’s regime, and passed into United States hands in the closing phase of the Second World War. The strongest public version gives April 1945 as the key moment: Allied forces reached northern Italy, the facility was allegedly captured, and the object or its debris was supposedly taken to America. The claim matters because it turns Magenta from an Italian archive mystery into a proposed origin story for later United States crash-retrieval allegations. At present, however, the public evidence remains claim-based: no authenticated American intelligence, military, transport, technical or diplomatic record has been produced that verifies a 1944 or 1945 retrieval of a non-human craft from Italy.

The wartime transfer claim
The transfer claim comes mainly from later UFO literature around the so-called Fascist UFO Files rather than from a known wartime United States archive. Roberto Pinotti’s English-language account, reproduced by The Black Vault, says the alleged 1933 object was stored in SIAI Marchetti hangars at Vergiate, a plausible-sounding site because it was an aviation facility in the Varese area. Pinotti’s account then adds that, at the end of the war, the United States Air Force and Nazi intelligence personnel were “simultaneously infiltrated” into Sesto Calende to investigate rumours of terrestrial flying saucers kept at Vergiate. It further states that in April 1945 the 1st Armoured Division captured the SIAI Marchetti aviation facility where the Magenta UFO or debris was “probably kept” and that it was brought to the United States. That wording is important. Even in the proponent account, the chain is partly inferential: the object was “probably” kept there, and its later movement to America is asserted without a displayed American custody record. The claim is therefore not equivalent to a documented seizure file. It is a narrative reconstruction built from alleged Italian papers, regional clues, wartime geography, rumours of post-war Allied interest and later UFO interpretation. A second, more recent public version entered mainstream UAP discussion through David Grusch, the former United States intelligence officer who testified before Congress in July 2023. Grusch alleged a long-running United States crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programme, and media summaries of his claims report that he said the first recovery occurred in Magenta, Italy, in 1933, with the United States acquiring the craft in 1944 or 1945 with Vatican assistance. The official House hearing page confirms the July 26, 2023 UAP hearing and its witnesses, including Grusch, while contemporary reporting records that his broader retrieval claims were not accompanied by public physical evidence. [House Documents]docs.house.gov“Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency” | Committee Repository…
The 1944–1945 transfer story therefore has two overlapping public forms. The Pinotti-linked form emphasises the Italian industrial site and the Allied capture of northern facilities in 1945. The Grusch-linked form adds a Vatican back-channel and frames the episode as the first known case in a wider alleged United States retrieval programme. The two are compatible as folklore, but they are not the same evidentiary package.
Why 1944 and 1945 matter
The dates are not incidental. They are chosen because the Allied campaign in Italy created a real historical pathway by which American forces, intelligence officers and technical specialists could gain access to former Fascist and German-controlled sites.
Rome was liberated in June 1944, but northern Italy remained contested for almost another year. The United States Army’s official campaign history notes that the first Fifth Army units reached Rome on 4 June 1944, that crowds welcomed the Americans the following day, and that the campaign continued northward for eleven more months. U.S. Army Center of Military History [history.army.mil]history.army.milU.S. Army Center of Military History Rome-ArnoU.S. Army Center of Military History Rome-Arno This matters because a 1944 retrieval from the Milan or Varese area would be difficult to reconcile with the military situation unless it involved intelligence channels rather than ordinary occupation of the site.
By contrast, April 1945 fits the geography much better. The final Allied offensive in northern Italy opened the path into the Po Valley and towards the industrial north. The United States Army’s Po Valley campaign history describes the April 1945 push into northern Italy, while National Park Service material summarises the final offensive as culminating in the unconditional surrender of German and Axis forces in Italy on 2 May 1945. U.S. Army Center of Military History [history.army.mil]history.army.milU.S. Army Center of Military History Po ValleyU.S. Army Center of Military History Po Valley That is why proponent versions often settle on April 1945: the claim needs a moment when Allied forces could physically reach the area where the object was supposedly stored.
The problem is that historical plausibility is not proof. Allied access to northern Italian aviation facilities in 1945 makes a transfer scenario possible in the ordinary logistical sense. It does not show that an unusual craft was present, that American forces identified it, that it was removed, or that a compartmented technical chain took custody of it.
What American intelligence records would need to show
If the United States acquired an extraordinary object from Italy in 1944 or 1945, the most likely documentary traces would not necessarily say “UFO”. Wartime records often used bland language, code names or technical categories. But a real recovery would still need a custody chain.
The most relevant American intelligence body for a late-war secret transfer is the Office of Strategic Services, or OSS, the wartime intelligence agency that conducted overt and covert intelligence collection, analysed raw intelligence and ran clandestine operations in support of military campaigns. The National Archives describes the OSS as established under the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1942 and abolished on 1 October 1945, with intelligence functions passing through successor bodies that eventually led to the CIA. [National Archives]archives.govNational Archives Records of the office of Strategic Services [OSSNational Archives Records of the office of Strategic Services [OSS
For the Magenta transfer claim, useful corroboration would probably look like one or more of the following:
- an OSS or War Department report identifying an unusual aviation object or advanced technical material at Vergiate, Sesto Calende or a nearby facility;
- a seizure, transport or guard order for sensitive material removed from northern Italy;
- an Allied technical intelligence file evaluating non-standard aircraft, propulsion, metals or recovered “enemy” technology from SIAI Marchetti facilities;
- a diplomatic cable or intelligence memorandum referring to Vatican information about an Italian-held object;
- a later United States custody record linking the material to a post-war laboratory, air intelligence office or defence contractor.
The absence of these records is not a trivial gap. The United States did document captured enemy technology, scientists, industrial facilities, art, intelligence networks and many forms of sensitive wartime material. The OSS record group alone is extensive, and the National Archives’ OSS guide identifies large bodies of files on intelligence operations, research, analysis, clandestine activity and post-war successor arrangements. [National Archives]archives.govNational Archives Records of the office of Strategic Services [OSSNational Archives Records of the office of Strategic Services [OSS
That makes the Magenta transfer claim testable in principle. It does not require immediate disclosure of an intact craft. It requires some independent sign that American authorities encountered, removed or evaluated an object matching the claim.
The Vatican back-channel problem
The Vatican element is one of the most vivid parts of the later American-transfer story, but it is also one of the least settled. In the Grusch-linked version, Pope Pius XII is said to have known of the Italian-held object and to have passed information to the United States, enabling the Americans to recover it. Catholic and mainstream media reporting has repeated the allegation as a claim connected to Grusch and later UFO-Vatican interest, while also making clear that it remains unverified. The historical setting makes a Vatican channel imaginable: wartime Rome, diplomacy, intelligence contacts and the Vatican’s unique position as a sovereign religious and diplomatic actor all created opportunities for quiet communication. But the specific claim still needs records. A credible version would need evidence in Vatican, American diplomatic, OSS, presidential or military archives showing that information about an Italian-held craft was passed to United States authorities.
There is also a contradiction inside the wider Magenta paper trail as described by sceptical researcher Pepijn van Erp. He notes that Pinotti’s own summary of one alleged protocol says transmission of reports was to be controlled by the RS/33 Cabinet and that other bodies, including a Pontifical University, were excluded. Van Erp argues that this sits awkwardly beside later claims that the Vatican was centrally involved in the United States recovery story. [Pepijn van Erp]pepijnvanerp.nlPepijn van Erp Mussolini's UFO – Cabinet RS/33Pepijn van Erp Mussolini's UFO – Cabinet RS/33
That does not make Vatican involvement impossible. It does mean the Vatican detail cannot simply be treated as inherited from the earliest Italian document claims. It appears to be a later expansion of the story, and therefore needs its own evidence rather than borrowing credibility from the alleged RS/33 documents.
1944 versus 1945: two different levels of plausibility
The two dates often appear together, but they do different work in the narrative.
A 1944 retrieval claim faces the harder military problem. Rome was in Allied hands from June 1944, but the northern industrial region around Milan, Varese, Vergiate and Sesto Calende was not yet under ordinary Allied control. A 1944 transfer would therefore require a clandestine intelligence operation, a Vatican or resistance channel, or some other route that bypassed the front line. That is not impossible in wartime Italy, where intelligence and resistance networks were active, but it raises the burden of proof.
A 1945 retrieval claim is geographically easier. By April 1945, Allied forces were moving into northern Italy and the German position was collapsing. If an object had been stored at an aviation facility, this is the window in which American personnel could plausibly have reached it openly or semi-openly. Pinotti’s version specifically leans on this April 1945 timing and the capture of the SIAI Marchetti facility. [theblackvault.com]theblackvault.comTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiTH E UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti
The distinction matters because weak retellings often merge the dates into a vague “1944–45” handover. For historical analysis, the difference is substantial. 1944 implies hidden wartime access before Allied occupation of the north. 1945 implies recovery during the collapse of the Italian front. Each version points to different records, different witnesses and different logistical pathways.
The official United States position
The strongest official counterweight is the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO, created within the United States Department of Defense to review UAP reports and historical claims. AARO’s 2024 historical report concluded that it had found no empirical evidence that the United States government or private companies possessed or reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. It also stated that claims involving named people, known locations, technological tests and documents were found to be inaccurate in the cases it reviewed, often because authentic classified programmes had been mistakenly associated with alien or extraterrestrial activity. [AARO]aaro.milUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical ReportUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical Report
AARO’s report is relevant to the Magenta transfer claim because the claim depends on a hidden United States custody chain beginning in 1944 or 1945. AARO did not publicly validate such a chain. Its broader assessment was that the alleged United States reverse-engineering narrative lacked evidence, and that no United States companies named by interviewees had recovered, possessed or reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. [AARO]aaro.milUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical ReportUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical Report
This does not settle every archival question. AARO’s Volume 1 mainly addresses the historical record from 1945 onward and summarises its own interviews and programme reviews, while some proponents argue that the most sensitive records would remain hidden or compartmented. But for public evidence, the official United States position is clear: no verified retrieval or reverse-engineering programme has been established.
What would change the assessment?
The American-transfer claim would become historically stronger if evidence appeared in one of three categories.
First, there would need to be independent wartime documentation. This could be an OSS file, War Department technical intelligence report, air intelligence memo, transport order, or Vatican-American diplomatic record tied to northern Italy in 1944 or 1945. The key requirement is not sensational wording but traceable provenance: repository, file number, date, author, custody history and consistency with surrounding records.
Second, there would need to be material evidence with a documented chain of custody back to Italy. A fragment claimed to be from Magenta would not be enough unless it could be connected through records, handling notes, laboratory analysis and independent expert review.
Third, there would need to be corroboration from multiple archives that do not depend on the same modern UFO source network. A Vatican lead, an OSS report, an Italian industrial record and a post-war United States technical file would have much more force if they converged independently.
At present, the American retrieval branch remains a historically plausible route attached to an unverified object. The 1945 setting fits the Allied advance into northern Italy; the OSS and later intelligence succession provide a possible bureaucratic pathway; and the Vatican element gives the story a dramatic diplomatic channel. But those features describe how a transfer could have happened, not proof that it did. The public record still lacks the documentary bridge between the alleged Italian custody of the Magenta object and any verified American possession after the war.
