Introduction
Pepijn van Erp’s sceptical reading of the alleged Magenta UFO crash is not mainly a broad denial that every part of the story is false. Its sharper point is that the modern version appears to contain later embellishments that do not sit comfortably with the earlier Italian claims. In particular, van Erp highlights two details that became prominent after David Grusch’s 2023 public comments: the Vatican allegedly helping the United States obtain the craft, and the object being described as “bell-shaped”. Van Erp argues that both details look less like independent classified confirmation and more like elements that may have entered the story through later UFO lore, especially accounts associated with Billy Brophy. That matters because the Magenta case is already fragile. Roberto Pinotti’s proponent account says the story rests on anonymously supplied “Fascist UFO Files”, connected to a supposed Cabinet RS/33 created under Mussolini and allegedly headed by Guglielmo Marconi. Pinotti presents the files as historically significant, but even his account acknowledges anonymous delivery, lost material, fruitless searches for direct eyewitnesses and sceptical responses from early recipients. [The Black Vault]theblackvault.comThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti Van Erp’s critique therefore focuses on source layering: when a weakly documented claim absorbs extra details over time, each new layer can make the story sound richer while making its evidential trail harder to trust.
What Van Erp Saw Changing in the Magenta Story
The earliest public Magenta narrative, as presented by Pinotti and Alfredo Lissoni, centres on an alleged 1933 incident near Magenta, the supposed creation or involvement of Cabinet RS/33, censorship instructions, and possible storage of the object in aviation facilities around Vergiate or Sesto Calende. Pinotti’s English-language account says the material was first discussed publicly at the 2000 World UFO Symposium in San Marino, after anonymous papers began arriving in 1996. It describes a craft that “crashed or landed” near Magenta on 11 April 1933, but later also refers to 13 June 1933 as the date of a “landed UFO” recovery. Van Erp’s concern begins where later retellings add more cinematic precision. In Grusch’s 2023 version, the Italian object was not merely an unspecified “flying saucer” or unconventional aircraft; it became a roughly twelve-metre, bell-shaped craft recovered in Magenta and later obtained by American intelligence with Vatican involvement. Van Erp noted that he had not found the bell-shaped detail in the Italian sources he reviewed, and he treated that absence as significant rather than incidental. [Pepijn van Erp]pepijnvanerp.nlPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van ErpPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van Erp
The distinction is small but important. A sceptic does not need to prove that every new detail is invented. It is enough to ask whether the newer detail has an independent documentary path back to 1933, or whether it first appears in later UFO storytelling. For van Erp, the bell shape and Vatican role both look like clues that the modern story may have been assembled from multiple narratives rather than transmitted unchanged from a hidden official archive. The Vatican Contradiction
The Vatican detail is the most revealing part of van Erp’s critique because it appears to reverse the logic of the original Italian papers. In Grusch’s public account, Pope Pius XII allegedly “backchannelled” information about the Italian craft to the United States, enabling American recovery near the end of the Second World War. Newsweek reported the same broad claim in 2023: Grusch alleged that Pius XII passed knowledge of the UFO to the United States, and that the Vatican knew about the matter. [Newsweek]newsweek.comPressure on Vatican to Reveal Archives After 'UFO CoverPressure on Vatican to Reveal Archives After 'UFO Cover
Van Erp points out that this is hard to reconcile with the protocol described in Pinotti’s own material. According to van Erp’s translation and discussion, Pinotti’s report says the transmission of reports to the Air Force was to be authorised by Cabinet RS/33 and that any other body was to be excluded, “including the Pontifical University”. Van Erp’s reading is that the cited wording excludes Papal or Vatican-linked academic channels from the information chain rather than placing them inside it. [Pepijn van Erp]pepijnvanerp.nlPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van ErpPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van Erp
That contradiction does not automatically settle the larger Magenta claim. A believer could argue that a secret Vatican backchannel might have existed outside the written protocol. Van Erp’s narrower point is more disciplined: the public documentary trail being used to support the case appears to say the opposite of what the later Vatican version needs it to say. If the earlier paper excludes pontifical institutions, then a later claim that the Pope was informed needs its own strong evidence. Without that, it looks like an added narrative bridge linking Mussolini’s Italy, wartime American intelligence and the Vatican’s aura of hidden archives.
The Vatican addition also changes the genre of the story. The original Magenta claim is a Fascist-era state secrecy story: police, censors, aviation facilities, military channels and Cabinet RS/33. The later Vatican version turns it into a transnational disclosure myth, in which the Holy See becomes an intermediary between Fascist Italy and the United States. That version is more dramatic, but van Erp’s critique asks whether it is better sourced. On the available public trail, the answer is weak.
The Bell-Shape Concern
The second detail van Erp highlights is the “bell-shaped” craft. In the material he reviewed, the Italian Magenta sources did not describe the 1933 object that way. Pinotti’s account instead uses terms such as “flying saucer”, “unconventional flying vehicle”, “landed UFO” and “crashed UFO”, while the broader Fascist-file material includes other shapes from later alleged sightings, such as a metallic disc, a tube, and “Saturn-shaped” objects over Mestre and Venice in 1936. [The Black Vault]theblackvault.comThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti
Van Erp connects the bell-shape detail to Billy Brophy, whose accounts mixed the Magenta story with other UFO and conspiracy motifs. In van Erp’s reading, Brophy seems to have joined Mussolini’s alleged UFO with the Nazi “Die Glocke” legend, a separate post-war conspiracy tradition about a supposed German bell-shaped anti-gravity or exotic-technology device. [Pepijn van Erp]pepijnvanerp.nlPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van ErpPepijn van Erp Mussolini’s UFO – Cabinet RS/33 – Pepijn van Erp Popular Mechanics describes “Die Glocke” as a persistent Nazi superweapon legend with little proof and no record of actual Allied capture, which is precisely why the resemblance matters: a bell-shaped Magenta craft may owe more to later Nazi-UFO lore than to the alleged Italian documents. [Popular Mechanics]popularmechanics.comdie glocke nazi bell conspiracydie glocke nazi bell conspiracy
Douglas Dean Johnson’s investigation of Brophy strengthens van Erp’s concern about source contamination. Johnson documents Brophy’s shifting claims about his father’s alleged involvement in multiple UFO crashes, including letters published in Flying Saucer Review and later claims about the Trinity UFO-crash story. Johnson reproduces a 2010 Brophy account in which Brophy linked the 1933 Magenta crash to tall blond beings, Eisenhower, Cardinal McIntyre and Pope Pius XII. [Mirador]douglasjohnson.ghost.ioOpen source on ghost.io.
For the Magenta case, this is not a side issue. If the bell shape entered the story through Brophy or related lore, then Grusch’s use of the same detail does not necessarily corroborate an independent classified source. It may instead show that the public UFO ecosystem had already combined the Italian crash story with other motifs before Grusch repeated a cleaned-up version of it. Metabunk’s long discussion of the claim makes a similar source-layering argument, noting that modern versions combine elements such as the bell shape, the Pope, American recovery and even unrelated “Nordic” body stories. Why Source Layering Matters
Source layering is the process by which a story accumulates details from different tellers, eras and traditions until the final version appears fuller than the evidence behind it. In the Magenta case, this matters because the base claim is already dependent on late-arriving documents, anonymous sourcing and contested authenticity. Pinotti argues that forensic and historical checks support at least some of the papers, while also noting that an original dossier was lost, early recipients dismissed the material, and direct eyewitness searches were mostly unsuccessful. [The Black Vault]theblackvault.comThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto PinottiThe Black Vault THE UFO FILES OF MUSSOLINI: Fascist UFO Files by Roberto Pinotti
Van Erp’s critique does not require the reader to decide, in one leap, whether the entire Magenta case is a hoax. It asks a more practical question: which details can be traced to the alleged Italian material, and which appear only after the story has circulated through UFO conferences, magazines, books, interviews and internet commentary? The Vatican and bell-shape details are important because they are memorable, but their memorability may be part of the problem. They help the story travel.
This is also why Grusch’s repetition of these details does not automatically strengthen them. If a later public figure repeats a claim that was already present in public UFO lore, the repetition can be mistaken for independent confirmation. Van Erp’s suspicion is that the route may run through public or semi-public UFO networks rather than through a clean classified archive. Metabunk frames the same risk in terms of “cobbled together” public versions that acquire new components over time, while Johnson’s work on Brophy shows how one prolific claimant could connect unrelated crash stories through his father and other figures. [Metabunk]metabunk.orgclaim a ufo crashed in 1933 italy and the us recovered it.13282claim a ufo crashed in 1933 italy and the us recovered it.13282
The broader UAP evidence environment makes that caution more important. NASA’s UAP information page says there are no data supporting the idea that UAP are evidence of alien technologies, while the 2024 AARO historical review reported no evidence for a United States government reverse-engineering narrative and said many claims were influenced by misidentification, secrecy around real programmes and circular reporting. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAP FAQsScience UAP FAQs Those findings do not directly adjudicate the 1933 Magenta documents, but they support van Erp’s methodological caution: extraordinary historical claims need traceable evidence, not merely stronger retellings.
What This Critique Changes About the Magenta Claim
Van Erp’s critique changes the way the Magenta story should be read. Instead of treating the current version as a single inherited account, it should be separated into layers:
- The Italian document layer: anonymous Fascist-era papers, Cabinet RS/33, censorship instructions, alleged storage sites and Pinotti’s argument for authenticity.
- The later UFO-lore layer: Vatican intervention, American recovery, bell-shaped craft, alien bodies and links to other crash-retrieval stories.
- The public-repetition layer: modern interviews, podcasts, articles and social media posts that repeat a hybrid version as though all parts have the same source value.
The key risk is that weak details can borrow credibility from stronger-sounding ones. Cabinet RS/33 gives the story bureaucratic texture. Magenta gives it a real location. Marconi gives it historical prestige. The Vatican gives it mystery. A bell-shaped craft gives it a vivid image. But those elements do not all have the same evidential status, and van Erp’s reading is valuable because it separates atmosphere from sourcing.
His critique also explains why contradictions are not trivial nitpicks. In a case with no publicly verified craft, no named first-hand recovery witnesses and no uncontested archive file, small source discrepancies carry unusual weight. A contradiction about whether pontifical institutions were excluded or informed is not merely a wording dispute; it tests whether later narrators are accurately preserving the alleged source material. A shape detail absent from the early Italian account is not just descriptive colour; it may reveal borrowing from another mythic stream.
The result is a more cautious assessment of the alleged Magenta crash. Van Erp does not need to prove exactly who added each embellishment, or why. His stronger point is that the modern story’s most dramatic additions do not appear securely rooted in the original Italian claims. For readers trying to evaluate the Magenta case, that makes source layering the central issue: before asking whether Mussolini recovered a non-human craft, one has to ask which version of the story is actually being tested.
