Did April 1945 Fit the Retrieval Story?

The April 1945 version depends on whether Allied forces plausibly reached and controlled the aviation site tied to the alleged storage location.

Introduction

One of the most specific versions of the alleged Magenta UFO retrieval story claims that the decisive moment came in April 1945, when advancing Allied forces supposedly captured the SIAI Marchetti aviation facilities in the Varese area and transferred the alleged craft to the United States. This timing is not arbitrary: it coincides with the final Allied offensive in northern Italy, when German and Fascist control collapsed and industrial sites were progressively occupied. The historical campaign makes such access geographically plausible. However, plausibility of access is not the same as evidence of a retrieval. The central historical question is therefore whether the documented military record supports the claim that Allied forces reached and secured the relevant aviation facilities—and whether any contemporary records show the seizure of an extraordinary object.

What the claim says happened in April 1945

The April 1945 version appears primarily in later UFO literature rather than in wartime military documentation. In Roberto Pinotti’s published account of the so-called Fascist UFO files, the alleged 1933 object was said to have been stored in SIAI Marchetti hangars around Vergiate or nearby Sesto Calende. According to this narrative, American forces reached the area during the final Allied advance, captured the aviation facility, and the object was subsequently taken to the United States.

The wording of these accounts is notable. Even supportive versions generally state that the object was “probably” stored at the facility rather than documenting its location through wartime records. The alleged transfer to the United States is presented as a conclusion rather than being accompanied by transport manifests, intelligence reports, engineering files, or authenticated custody records.

A related version entered wider public discussion through former intelligence officer David Grusch, who alleged that the United States acquired a craft originally recovered in Fascist Italy, with assistance from Pope Pius XII during the closing phase of the war. His public statements describe an alleged retrieval programme but were not accompanied by publicly released documentary evidence demonstrating the April 1945 seizure itself. How the Po Valley campaign changes the geography

The strongest historical support for the April 1945 scenario concerns geography rather than the UFO claim itself.

The Allied Spring Offensive—Operation Grapeshot—began in early April 1945 after months of stalemate along the Gothic Line. Once German defensive positions collapsed, Allied armies advanced rapidly across the Po Valley toward Milan, Turin and the Alpine frontier. Official U.S. Army campaign histories describe a fast-moving offensive in which Allied forces occupied major industrial centres across northern Italy before the general surrender on 2 May 1945. This matters because Vergiate and Sesto Calende lie northwest of Milan within the broader region ultimately occupied during this advance. By the final week of April, American armoured formations were moving rapidly through Lombardy. Histories of the U.S. 1st Armored Division record its liberation of Milan on 30 April after crossing the Po and advancing into north-western Italy. Consequently, the claim that Allied personnel could have reached aviation facilities associated with SIAI Marchetti is historically compatible with the campaign timeline. The campaign itself does not make the alleged retrieval true, but it removes one obvious objection—that Allied forces never gained physical access to the relevant area.

Did Allied control automatically imply a retrieval?

Not necessarily.

Industrial aviation facilities routinely became Allied objectives during the final campaign because they contained aircraft, engines, technical drawings, machine tools and research material valuable for post-war intelligence exploitation. SIAI Marchetti was a significant Italian aircraft manufacturer whose factories produced military aircraft and had been repeatedly targeted by Allied bombing during the war. By 1945 much of its industrial capacity had already been heavily damaged. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.

This established practice means that Allied inspection teams visiting such a site would have been entirely expected. The existence of legitimate technical exploitation programmes, however, does not by itself demonstrate that an alleged non-human craft was present.

The distinction is important because the retrieval narrative often moves directly from “the Allies captured the factory” to “therefore they recovered the object.” Historically, those are separate propositions requiring different evidence.

What site-control records would need to show

If an extraordinary retrieval occurred, historians would expect several categories of surviving documentation rather than a single dramatic report.

Relevant records could include:

  • Allied operational reports identifying the occupation of the specific SIAI Marchetti installation.
  • Intelligence exploitation reports describing unusual discoveries.
  • Technical inspection records prepared by aviation specialists.
  • Shipping manifests or transport orders for unusual cargo.
  • Correspondence between occupation authorities and higher headquarters.
  • Italian company records noting Allied seizure of specific facilities or inventories.

Large-scale Allied exploitation of German and Italian technology generated extensive archival documentation in many other cases, including aircraft, rockets and scientific equipment. The absence of comparable authenticated documentation for an alleged Magenta craft therefore represents one of the principal evidential weaknesses in the April 1945 retrieval claim.

Equally significant is the lack of publicly available U.S. archival material identifying an extraordinary object recovered from Vergiate or Sesto Calende during the occupation.

Assessing the frequently cited reference to the 1st Armored Division

Some versions of the story specifically identify the U.S. 1st Armored Division as the formation that captured the SIAI Marchetti facility.

The division unquestionably participated in the final offensive and advanced into Lombardy, eventually entering Milan at the end of April 1945. Official campaign histories support that broader operational role. [britishmilitaryhistory.co.uk]britishmilitaryhistory.co.ukItaly 1943-1945 - US Armoured Division - British Military HistoryIn the final offensive, the 1 Armored Division broke out into the Po val…

However, publicly available divisional histories do not identify the capture of a SIAI Marchetti storage site as a notable operation, nor do they mention recovering an unknown aircraft or unconventional technology. Given the extensive surviving operational records for the division’s movements, this absence does not disprove the UFO allegation but means the specific claim remains unsupported by contemporary military documentation.

What this means for the April 1945 retrieval story

The April 1945 version of the Magenta narrative rests on a mixture of well-established military history and much weaker evidential claims.

The historical component is straightforward: Allied armies did overrun northern Italy, industrial aviation facilities did fall under Allied control, and American technical teams had legitimate reasons to inspect aircraft factories and research sites during the final weeks of the war. U.S. Army Center of Military History [history.army.mil]history.army.milArmy Center of Military HistoryPo ValleyDecember 15, 2010 — On 5 April 1945, the U.S. 92d Infantry Division began its diversion- ary atta…Published: December 15, 2010

The disputed component is the leap from documented occupation to the alleged recovery of an extraterrestrial craft. No authenticated wartime American record, Allied intelligence file, transport document, or verified SIAI Marchetti archive has yet been produced showing that such an object existed at the facility or was removed during the occupation.

As a result, the April 1945 capture claim remains historically possible in the limited sense that Allied forces reached the relevant region and could have examined the site. It is not historically demonstrated that this access resulted in the retrieval described in later UFO accounts. The geography and military chronology fit the narrative considerably better than they prove it, leaving the alleged transfer dependent on later testimony and secondary claims rather than contemporaneous documentary evidence.
