Supporters of the alleged 1933 Magenta UFO recovery often argue that the claimed storage location is one of the story’s more believable elements. Rather than describing a secret base invented for the narrative, the claim places the recovered object in the hangars of the SIAI-Marchetti aircraft works at Vergiate in Lombardy, an authentic aviation facility with the industrial capacity to house large aircraft. Why Vergiate and Lombardy fit the claim
Northern Italy was one of the country’s principal aviation centres during the interwar period. The region around Milan contained aircraft manufacturers, engineering firms, military infrastructure and skilled technical personnel. Within that setting, the SIAI-Marchetti factory at Vergiate was a genuine and strategically significant aircraft production site.
Founded as Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia (SIAI) before later becoming associated with the Marchetti name, the company produced flying boats, military aircraft and other aeronautical designs for the Italian state. Large assembly halls and hangars capable of accommodating aircraft already existed because they were essential to the firm’s ordinary business. Supporters therefore argue that the alleged storage location reflects real industrial geography rather than fantasy. Lombardy’s aviation infrastructure was genuine, and Vergiate was close enough to the alleged Magenta recovery site to make transportation conceivable within the technological and administrative capabilities of Fascist Italy.
That geographical fit, however, has an important limitation. The suitability of a location says nothing about whether the claimed event actually happened. Thousands of legitimate military and industrial facilities could theoretically have stored classified equipment without implying that every extraordinary claim connected to them is historically accurate.

Supporters of the Magenta story frequently point to exactly this reasoning. Early versions of the narrative describe Mussolini initially believing the recovered object might represent a secret French, British or German weapon before later speculation allegedly shifted towards a more extraordinary explanation. Within that framework, placing the object at an aircraft manufacturer appears administratively sensible because engineers would have been expected to inspect unfamiliar technology. The reasoning nevertheless remains hypothetical. It demonstrates that the claimed sequence of events is internally coherent, not that independent historical evidence confirms it.
What the storage claim actually rests on
One of the most important limits of this argument is that the association between the alleged crash and the SIAI-Marchetti hangars comes primarily from the same body of late-emerging UFO documents and accounts promoted by Italian researcher Roberto Pinotti and collaborators. The storage location is not independently established through factory records, military inventories or surviving government correspondence discovered in recognised archives. As a result, the hangar claim is not an independent piece of corroboration. Instead, it forms part of the same evidential chain as the broader Magenta narrative. If the underlying documents are authentic, the storage claim gains credibility alongside them. If those documents are unreliable or fabricated, the reference to Vergiate loses most of its evidential value as well.
This distinction is often overlooked. Readers sometimes treat the existence of a real factory as though it independently supports the story, when in reality the factory’s existence and the storage allegation arise from different kinds of evidence. One is historically documented; the other depends upon the disputed document trail.
What a storage-site record would need to show
If the Vergiate hangars had genuinely housed an object of exceptional importance, historians would look for evidence extending beyond the later UFO narrative. Examples include:
- authenticated factory correspondence referring to an unidentified object;
- military transport records documenting an unusual delivery;
- engineering reports describing examination of an unknown airframe;
- inventory or security records indicating exceptional restrictions;
- multiple independent eyewitness accounts recorded close to the time rather than decades later;
- archival material from different institutions that converges on the same event.
None of these forms of corroboration has been publicly verified in connection with the alleged Magenta recovery. Does the existence of the hangars strengthen the case?
To a limited extent, yes. The SIAI-Marchetti facility removes one objection—that the story depends on an obviously impossible storage location. A major aviation manufacturer in northern Italy could realistically have accommodated and examined an unusual aircraft under conditions of government secrecy.
Beyond that point, however, the argument reaches its evidential limit. The real existence of suitable hangars demonstrates logistical possibility rather than historical occurrence. No publicly verified archival record has shown that an unidentified craft was ever transported to Vergiate, stored there, or examined by SIAI-Marchetti personnel.
