Introduction
One of the most concrete details in later retellings of the alleged 1933 Magenta UFO crash is the claim that the recovered object was hidden at the SIAI-Marchetti aircraft works in Vergiate, northwest of Milan. This detail matters because it moves the story beyond anonymous military secrecy into a specific industrial setting. Unlike broad claims about secret government programmes, a named aircraft factory should have generated traces in company records, military correspondence, construction files, personnel accounts or post-war investigations.
To date, however, no independently verified factory documentation has emerged showing that SIAI-Marchetti stored, examined or modified an unknown recovered craft. The gap between the specificity of the claim and the absence of corroborating industrial records has therefore become one of the strongest points of sceptical analysis. Rather than asking whether governments can keep secrets in principle, the more focused historical question is whether this particular factory leaves any documentary footprint consistent with the story.
Why SIAI-Marchetti appears in retellings
The association with SIAI-Marchetti did not appear in contemporary 1930s reporting. Instead, it entered the narrative decades later through the documents and interpretations promoted by Italian UFO researcher Roberto Pinotti and collaborators after anonymous material surfaced in the late 1990s. According to these accounts, the recovered object was moved to SIAI-Marchetti’s facilities at Vergiate because they were secure aviation works operating under Fascist military authority. The choice of location is not arbitrary. SIAI (later Savoia-Marchetti and eventually SIAI-Marchetti) was one of Italy’s leading aircraft manufacturers during the interwar period. Its factories produced military aircraft, flying boats and experimental designs, making the company a plausible location for classified aeronautical work in general. The firm maintained close relationships with the Regia Aeronautica (Royal Italian Air Force), and wartime production was sufficiently important that its facilities became Allied bombing targets during the Second World War. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
This historical reality gives the story surface plausibility. If an unknown aircraft required technical examination, an established aircraft manufacturer would seem a logical destination. However, plausibility of location is not evidence that the transfer actually occurred.
What factory records should show
If the Magenta narrative were substantially accurate, historians would expect at least some indirect evidence within the surviving industrial record.
Potential indicators include:
- unusual construction or modification of secure hangars;
- correspondence between the company and military authorities concerning extraordinary classified work;
- procurement records for handling unusually large or unfamiliar objects;
- engineering reports describing examination of unidentified structures or materials;
- personnel diaries or memoirs referring to highly unusual restricted projects;
- post-war Allied intelligence reports documenting the discovery of such material.
None of these categories has produced publicly verified evidence directly supporting the SIAI-Marchetti claim. Although proponents argue that records could have been destroyed during the war, historians generally note that total documentary disappearance across every independent archive is difficult to demonstrate, especially for an industrial enterprise whose normal production history is otherwise well documented. The issue is not that every secret project inevitably leaves complete records. Rather, highly significant industrial programmes usually generate fragmented but recognisable traces across multiple institutions, including government archives, company files, procurement systems, engineering correspondence and later recollections. Those intersecting lines of evidence have not appeared for the alleged storage of an extraterrestrial craft at SIAI-Marchetti.
The problem with the reported 1940 fire
Supporters sometimes point to a fire that damaged SIAI-Marchetti facilities in 1940, suggesting that it may explain why documentation no longer exists or even implying that the destruction itself was suspicious. Later retellings occasionally speculate that the alleged craft had been housed in a hangar destroyed by that fire. [Wanted in Rome]wantedinrome.comWanted in RomeThe Secret Crash That Predated Roswell: Mussolini's UFO…2 Mar 2026 — Italy's Secret UFO Files: The Crash That Predated R…
This argument faces two difficulties.
First, no independent evidence connects the fire to any recovered object. The existence of wartime damage does not establish what was inside a building before it burned.
Second, even if one accepts that records at a single factory could have been lost, major military-industrial projects normally generate duplicate documentation elsewhere. Government ministries, the air force, contractors, inspectors and procurement offices frequently retain overlapping paperwork. The absence of corroboration outside the factory therefore remains significant.
Consequently, the fire functions more as a possible explanation for missing evidence than as evidence supporting the underlying claim.
How industrial secrecy can mislead readers
Real military aviation programmes often operated under strict secrecy, especially in Fascist Italy. Aircraft prototypes, weapons research and advanced propulsion experiments were routinely compartmentalised, and many projects remained unknown to the wider public until years later.
That historical reality creates an important interpretive trap.
Readers may reason that because genuine secret aviation projects existed, an alleged UFO reverse-engineering programme could have existed as well. Historians generally reject this inference. Secrecy explains why records may be incomplete, but it does not substitute for evidence that a specific secret project occurred.
Known classified Italian aviation work—including research at Guidonia, prototype aircraft development and experimental propulsion—can be reconstructed from surviving technical papers, procurement records, engineering reports and post-war historical studies. These programmes leave fragmented but coherent documentary trails. The alleged SIAI-Marchetti UFO storage programme does not currently display the same pattern. The factory-record gap remains the central test
Among the many disputed elements of the Magenta story, the SIAI-Marchetti claim is unusually valuable because it can be investigated through conventional historical methods.
The story identifies:
- a specific company;
- a specific industrial site;
- an approximate timeframe;
- an alleged purpose for the facility.
Those concrete details create opportunities for archival verification rather than relying solely on witness testimony or anonymous documents.
At present, the evidence remains asymmetrical. The claim identifies SIAI-Marchetti as the storage location for the alleged recovered craft, but independent factory records, military archives and documented industrial history have not confirmed that such an operation occurred. Most versions of the narrative ultimately trace back to the same late-emerging collection of disputed documents and subsequent interpretations rather than multiple independent documentary sources. For that reason, the “factory-record gap” remains one of the strongest unresolved tests of the broader Magenta narrative. A verified company archive, engineering report or contemporaneous military document linking SIAI-Marchetti to an unidentified recovered craft would materially strengthen the historical case. Until such evidence appears, the named factory serves primarily as a specific but uncorroborated element within a much larger and highly contested story.
