Introduction

One of the weakest points in the documentary record surrounding the alleged 1933 Magenta UFO crash is not simply that many documents surfaced anonymously decades later, but that some of the material said to have been closest to the original source is no longer available. If an original dossier has genuinely been lost, historians, archivists and forensic document specialists cannot repeat examinations, compare physical characteristics or independently verify claims about authenticity. That does not prove the surviving copies are false, but it significantly limits what can ever be established from them. In the Magenta case, this missing material has become an important part of the debate because the inability to perform repeat testing leaves later researchers dependent on earlier descriptions and reproductions rather than the primary evidence itself. The reported lost Il Resto del Carlino dossier

According to Roberto Pinotti’s published account of the so-called “Fascist UFO Files”, one of the earliest anonymous packages was sent to the Italian newspaper Il Resto del Carlino. The package reportedly contained a substantial dossier relating to alleged “unconventional flying vehicles” and the supposed Cabinet RS/33 investigation. Pinotti later wrote that this original dossier was subsequently lost. The reported loss matters because this was described as an original compilation rather than a later reproduction. If the account is accurate, researchers no longer have access to the physical paper, ink, page order, annotations, staples, folds or other material features that often help establish whether documents belong together and when they were created. Instead, discussion relies largely on surviving photocopies, selected releases and published reproductions. The story has also been described inconsistently in later retellings. Some accounts refer to an original dossier, while others describe the package as a collection of photocopies. These differences make it difficult to reconstruct exactly what physical material existed at each stage of the chain of custody, adding another layer of uncertainty. Why copies are weaker than originals

For historians and forensic document examiners, a photocopy is rarely equivalent to an original document. Even an excellent copy preserves only part of the available evidence.

An original document can potentially reveal:

  • the age and composition of the paper;
  • ink characteristics and whether different entries were made at different times;
  • pressure marks left by handwriting;
  • erasures, overwriting or chemical alterations;
  • watermarks, printer or typewriter characteristics;
  • folds, filing marks and evidence of long-term storage.

Most of these features disappear entirely in a photocopy. Even high-resolution scans cannot recover information that was never captured during copying.

This limitation is especially important for extraordinary historical claims. If a document supposedly originated within a secret Fascist government programme but survives only as a copy, investigators cannot independently test many of the features that normally help distinguish an authentic period document from a later reconstruction or sophisticated forgery. How missing files affect later authentication

The reported disappearance of the dossier has several practical consequences for authentication.

First, independent experts cannot repeat previous examinations. Any forensic conclusions reached by earlier investigators become difficult to verify because the underlying material is unavailable for fresh analysis.

Second, researchers cannot compare multiple originals. Historians often authenticate archives by examining groups of documents together—checking whether paper stocks, filing systems, numbering conventions and administrative practices remain internally consistent. Missing originals prevent that kind of comparison.

Third, later reproductions become increasingly influential. As copies are reproduced in books, magazines and online articles, subtle changes in image quality, cropping or contrast can occur. Future researchers may unknowingly analyse a reproduction of a reproduction rather than material closest to the alleged source.

Finally, the absence of originals limits peer review. In historical research, important findings gain credibility when independent specialists can inspect the same evidence and either confirm or challenge earlier conclusions. Without access to the physical documents, that process is necessarily incomplete. What can still be examined?

The loss of one reported dossier does not mean every surviving document is beyond analysis. Researchers can still study several aspects of the remaining material, including:

  • consistency of language with known Fascist-era administrative style;
  • historical accuracy of institutional names and bureaucratic terminology;
  • comparison with authenticated government telegram formats;
  • provenance of surviving copies;
  • whether independent archival records mention the same events or offices.

These methods can identify inconsistencies or strengthen contextual plausibility, but they cannot replace examination of missing originals. Historical authentication is strongest when documentary analysis is supported by an unbroken chain of custody and corroborating archival records, neither of which has been publicly established for the Magenta material. Why the missing originals remain a central weakness

The reported loss of the Il Resto del Carlino dossier illustrates a broader problem affecting the Magenta case. Even if some surviving copies appear consistent with period formats or contain historically accurate details, extraordinary claims require evidence that other researchers can inspect independently.

Because the alleged originals are unavailable, later investigators cannot repeat forensic tests, verify earlier findings or determine whether the surviving copies faithfully represent the original documents. As a result, the debate shifts away from direct authentication and towards assessments of provenance, consistency and plausibility. That does not resolve whether the documents are genuine or fabricated, but it does explain why the missing originals continue to be regarded as one of the principal obstacles to establishing the evidential value of the Magenta file collection.
