Was Vergiate Really the Right Hangar?

The Magenta story often names Vergiate, but the public claim also leaves room for nearby Sesto Calende as the more plausible early storage location.

Introduction

The alleged 1933 Magenta UFO recovery is most often said to have been stored at SIAI-Marchetti’s facilities in Vergiate. However, when the claim is examined closely, the distinction between Vergiate and nearby Sesto Calende becomes much less certain. Rather than pointing to a specific documented hangar, the public versions of the story frequently shift between the two locations or treat them as part of a single aviation complex. That ambiguity matters because it affects one of the story’s most tangible claims: where the recovered object was supposedly hidden.

Two Sites illustration 1 The available historical evidence confirms that both Vergiate and Sesto Calende belonged to the same northern Italian aviation corridor and both were genuinely associated with SIAI-Marchetti. What has never emerged is an authenticated wartime document, company record, or independent witness that identifies a particular building at either site as the storage location. As a result, the debate is less about choosing the “correct” hangar than about understanding why the narrative remains geographically imprecise. Why the two locations get blurred together

The confusion is not accidental. SIAI (Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia) was founded in 1915 at Sesto Calende on Lake Maggiore, where its original seaplane base and workshops were established. As the company expanded, industrial activity spread to nearby Vergiate, whose airfield became increasingly important for aircraft manufacture, assembly and testing. The two towns lie only a few kilometres apart and became closely linked within a single aerospace district. This historical geography explains why later writers sometimes use the names almost interchangeably. Someone familiar only with the broader SIAI-Marchetti industrial area could plausibly refer to “the Vergiate hangars” while another writer might describe the same industrial network as being at Sesto Calende.

The published UFO narrative itself reflects this uncertainty. Roberto Pinotti’s presentations generally identify Vergiate as the storage site, whereas Alfredo Lissoni has described the object as possibly being hidden in the nearest discreet SIAI-Marchetti hangars at either Vergiate or Sesto Calende. The wording is significant because it acknowledges uncertainty instead of identifying a specific facility. What each site could plausibly offer in 1933

From a purely historical standpoint, both locations possess characteristics that make them superficially compatible with a secret storage story.

Vergiate offered:

  • Established aircraft manufacturing facilities.
  • Large hangars and production buildings.
  • An operational airfield connected with aircraft testing.
  • Military-industrial activity that naturally involved restricted access. [Wikipedia+2Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.

These features explain why Vergiate became the dominant location in the UFO narrative. A large aircraft works appears intuitively suitable for storing an unusual airframe while allowing engineers to examine it.

If one ignores later retellings and simply asks which SIAI facilities existed in 1933, Sesto Calende is at least as historically relevant as Vergiate. It was not an unrelated neighbouring town but part of the same industrial organisation.

Neither location therefore stands out as uniquely capable of accommodating an alleged recovered craft. Both possessed genuine aviation infrastructure, which means the argument rests almost entirely on the later documentary tradition rather than on the physical characteristics of the sites themselves.

Why some researchers view Sesto Calende as a plausible alternative

The case for Sesto Calende does not arise from new documentary discoveries but from historical context.

The company originated there, and many corporate functions remained centred on the Sesto Calende complex during the interwar period. If an unidentified aircraft had genuinely been recovered and transferred to SIAI specialists, it is not inherently obvious that it would have bypassed the company’s principal engineering base in favour of another nearby facility.

Equally, the alleged recovery has never been linked to:

  • a named hangar,
  • a numbered building,
  • a transport manifest,
  • company correspondence,
  • engineering reports,
  • security records, or
  • employee testimony that independently identifies either town.

Without such evidence, the choice between Vergiate and Sesto Calende becomes largely inferential rather than documentary. Historians therefore cannot establish which location—if either—served as the alleged storage site. How the ambiguity weakens the storage claim

The uncertainty over location illustrates a broader evidential problem within the Magenta story.

If a highly secret object had been transferred into one of Italy’s leading aircraft factories, historians would normally expect at least some trace to survive, such as administrative paperwork, wartime correspondence, engineering references, logistics records or later corroborating testimony from identifiable personnel. None has been publicly produced for either Vergiate or Sesto Calende. [lia.fondazioneleonardo.com]lia.fondazioneleonardo.comArchivio Storico SIAI MarchettiL'archivio della SIAI Marchetti consta in un corpus documentale che comprende oltre 50.000 tra disegni tec…

Instead, the location appears to have become more specific only in later retellings. Early public discussions focused primarily on the alleged Fascist documents and the existence of the supposed RS/33 committee. The precise hangar is never independently established through archival material.

Critics have also pointed out that an authentic industrial location can make an extraordinary story appear more credible without actually supplying evidence for the extraordinary element itself. The existence of real SIAI-Marchetti facilities proves only that suitable buildings existed—not that an anomalous craft was ever housed inside them. Was Vergiate really the right hangar?

Based on publicly available evidence, there is no firm historical basis for identifying a specific Vergiate hangar as the storage location.

Vergiate remains the best-known site because it appears consistently in Roberto Pinotti’s published version of the narrative and because it was unquestionably an important aviation centre. However, the close historical relationship between Vergiate and Sesto Calende explains why some researchers regard the latter as an equally plausible candidate if the story were true.

The more important conclusion is that the uncertainty itself undermines the claim. After decades of discussion, the public record still cannot identify a documented building, a verified chain of custody, or independent archival evidence tying the alleged recovered object to either location. The debate therefore remains one of comparative plausibility rather than demonstrated historical fact.
